work / 'MOBILO'- SWATCH COMMISSION 1998
'Mobilo'
In 1998 I was commissioned by Swatch in New York City to design a prototype watch for their upcoming Winter 'artist series'. Ultimately, I saw the design more as a small kinetic sculpture, where the hands themselves formed continuous patterns as they moved in circles around the face, hence its title, 'Mobilo'. The casing and straps remained transparent and free from any added designs, so as to keep focus on the face itself. I based the form on one of Dana's bangles. I insisted on having no numerals on the face of the watch, again, so that the focus could remain on the forms themselves....which is probably one of the (many) reasons the prototype never made it into production.
